What Happens During Gunite Pool Construction Start to Finish

Gunite pool construction is a detailed process that turns a blank yard into a backyard retreat. If you’re thinking about putting in a pool, it’s helpful to understand how the whole thing comes together from start to finish. Building something that lasts takes time, planning, and a crew that works in sync at every stage. There’s more going on underground and behind the scenes than most people realize.

The steps we take during a gunite pool build aren’t rushed. Each one lays the groundwork for the next, and skipping over any of them sets up problems down the line. Here’s what to expect as the project moves from an idea on paper to a finished pool you can swim in.

Planning and Design Kickoff

The process always starts with a conversation. That first meeting is when we get to walk the yard, listen to your goals, and talk through what’s possible based on the space. We’ll usually sketch out a few ideas and then build a 3D model that gives a preview of how everything will look once installed.

Before any digging starts, we’ll:

• Go over your property lines and layout to check for any space issues

• Submit permit applications for city or parish approval (depending on where the pool is going)

• Study the soil to make sure it drains well and won’t shift too much when it gets wet

This upfront prep is one of the most important parts of the job. If we know what to expect from the yard, we can build the right plan to match.

Preparing the Yard for Construction

Once the design is nailed down and the permits are greenlit, we move to the prep stage. That means shifting focus to the yard itself. Our crews clear the build area, outline the pool shape using wooden forms, and get it ready for digging.

Excavation comes next. A backhoe or mini excavator is used to remove soil down to the depth needed for the pool. We’re not just digging a big hole. We’re shaping the foundation of your future pool.

During this step, we watch for:

• Tree roots, fencing, or underground utilities that might get in the way

• Soft areas in the soil that need reinforcement

• Yard slopes that could affect how water drains later on

Every backyard is a little different, so we adjust things as needed to get solid ground for building.

Building the Pool’s Frame and Shell

Now we start creating the pool’s structure. We bend steel rebar into position, tying each bar together to make a reinforced cage that outlines the walls, floor, and any built-in features like steps or ledges. This grid acts like the skeleton for the whole thing.

Here’s where the shotcrete or gunite comes in. Crews spray the concrete mix over the rebar frame using a high-pressure hose. Once applied, the material starts to harden and form the final shape of the pool.

This stage makes or breaks the long-term strength of the build:

• The steel frame gives the pool support from the inside out

• The gunite shell hardens into place and doesn’t shift as the ground moves

• Corners, curves, and slope lines are all double-checked before the shell dries

Strong pools start here, which is why we take the time to do this part carefully and thoroughly.

Plumbing, Electrical, and Surface Finish

After the shell has cured, we move on to the systems that make the pool work. That includes placing pipes for water circulation, setting up the electrical runs for lights or heaters, and pouring slabs for equipment pads.

Depending on the style and finish you picked, we’ll then add the final surface layer next. That could be plaster, tile, or pebble concrete. All of these provide protection and texture, while also giving your pool its look and feel.

The details come together during this step, like:

• Adding return jets, drains, and lighting

• Installing tanning ledges, bubblers, or spillovers if planned in the design

• Sealing the surface for color, texture, and durability

Everything needs to line up cleanly before we start filling the pool.

Filling, Testing, and Final Walkthrough

Once the surfaces are sealed and polished, it’s time to turn on the water. As the pool fills, we stay close to monitor every part of the system. Filters, heaters, pumps, and lights are all tested one at a time to make sure they work as expected.

We also handle water chemistry at this point. That means balancing pH levels and making sure everything’s safe for swimming. When everything checks out, we walk through the whole setup with you. That includes showing how to:

• Clean the filters and test the water

• Set timers or automation systems

• Adjust the pump and heater when needed

This part helps you feel comfortable taking care of your new pool once we’re finished.

From Groundwork to Swim-Ready: What to Expect

Every gunite pool build takes effort, layers of planning, and a lot of teamwork, but each step plays its part in the bigger picture. When we follow the right sequence and put in the time for small details, what you end up with isn’t just a concrete shell. You get a pool that handles weather and stays strong year after year.
